Tanzania is a source of abundant and diverse natural resources, economic opportunities, and a wide range of impressive cultural creativity. It is ironic however; that most of her population lives below poverty line. Lack of or limited health care, education, and absence of market-driven economic activities have greatly contributed to the current abject poverty level.
Bukoba-Tanzania Medical Initiatives (BUTAMED) Foundation was formed to foster the development of public health infrastructure utilizing local and international partnerships to improve the health of the people of Bukoba and Tanzania in general. We will achieve our goals through researching, training and promoting innovative healthcare solutions, investing in cutting-edge medical technology, encouraging interchange and partnerships between the people of Tanzania and the United States. Our efforts shall largely focus and aim at community grassroots, or, in other words, the most disadvantaged rural communities.

Dr. Rwebangila Memorial Hospital (RMH) in Bukoba has served over 72,000 outpatients since its inception. RMH is a response to high demand of health care services around Bukoba and Kagera region in general. The region has population of around four million. The facility has 50-beds.
CHAI (Community Health Awareness Initiative) in Tanzania has been mobilizing women and providing women’s health education in rural communities using Community Health Workers (CHWs) since 2010. CHAI provides training for nurses and community health workers throughout Tanzania.
